      Technical Writer Interview

      20 Apr 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Motiv Electric Trucks

      Interview

The recruiter and hiring manager were friendly. The first part of the interview process was a phone screen and then a call with the hiring manager. The only con was the lack of courtesy by the company and the ghosting. If a candidate has the decency to interview and take time from their workday to speak with the company, then the company should at least close the loop with the said candidate. Don't ghost your candidates.

      Interview

Recruiter was 10 minutes lates for our first interview. She at least had the courtesy to apologize for it but it was still pretty frustrating and gave me a bad first impression of her and the company. While she was professional during the interview, she seemed detached and not very interested in what I had to say. I knew I was not likely to get the position. I was ghosted and have not received an update. I should have expected this type of behavior as soon as she was late to the first interview. Apply elsewhere.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Motiv Electric Trucks (Foster City, CA) in Jul 2021

      Interview

It began with a half-hour phone screen with one person, followed by a half-hour Zoom interview with another. Both were standard experiences with common questions, but I noticed something fishy in the first interview: they refused to give any hint of a salary range. At the end of the second interview, I found out why: it was FORTY-THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS below the median wage. I pointed out the difference, and provided my source (the Bureau of Labor Statistics), yet this interviewer tried to deny it, claiming my figures are "only for senior-level positions" (not true). She then countered with a number from Salary.com for a rock-bottom entry-level role, even though everything they said in both interviews implied they were seeking a candidate with experience and expertise. Basically, they were trying to have it both ways -- a seasoned professional willing to settle for college intern wages. I got the impression of a company that's not honest, not forthcoming, doesn't respect people's time, and whose main concern is paying its employees as little as possible.
