I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at MovieMax Cinemas (Mumbai)
Interview
I was invited to interview for a Head HR position at Moviemax Cinemas, which initially seemed like an exciting opportunity. However, the interview process revealed several concerning aspects about the company's hiring practices.
The interview was conducted by a Learning and Development Manager rather than someone from HR or senior leadership, which seemed unusual for such a strategic role. As an HR professional, I understand the importance of having relevant expertise when evaluating candidates for specialized positions, particularly at the leadership level.
Unfortunately, the focus of the evaluation appeared to center more on personal appearance than on my qualifications, experience, or strategic HR capabilities. I was ultimately told that my footwear choice (sneakers) was the primary reason for rejection, despite my extensive HR background and relevant experience for the role.
This experience raised questions about the company's understanding of modern professional standards and their approach to talent evaluation. For a Head HR position, I would have expected discussions around HR strategy, organizational development, employee engagement, and other core competencies rather than a focus on dress code adherence.
Advice to Management:
Consider having HR roles interviewed by HR professionals or senior leadership who can properly assess technical competencies. Also, ensure interviewers are trained on what criteria should actually matter for role success.
Questions Asked:
Limited focus on HR expertise; primary attention given to appearance and dress code compliance.
This experience provided valuable insight into the company's culture and hiring priorities, which ultimately helped me determine this may not have been the right organizational fit.
Throughout the process, each stage assesses different skills, from technical expertise to soft skills and cultural fit. The key is to be prepared with examples of past experiences, a solid understanding of project management methodologies, and an ability to convey how you’ll add value to their team.
