      Web Design Specialist Interview

      1 Oct 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at NiceJob

      Interview

It seems like they don't even read your resume—it's passed through some automated keyword checker and then you're sent a link for a one-way interview where you record your answers to surface-level questions. If you're successful, they'll schedule an interview with you (3 interviewers). They asked very basic questions that I felt confident about answering, but all through the interview they were sending private messages back and forth to each other and making rude facial expressions. It was just not professional at all and really showed their level of maturity. It seemed like the interviewer walked into our call with their minds already made up and tried to rush me through my questions at the end. They all seemed very cliquey and judgmental to begin with. When asked questions about the company's projected growth and some other important (uncomfortable/money) questions to ask at any startup, I didn't receive any clear answers that I thought indicated they had a solid plan or strategy in place which was a red flag. They requested three references after the video interview. Apparently the reference form was super in-depth and time consuming. Anyway, I passed that stage and even after sending my portfolio full of demonstrated work and design abilities, they asked me to complete a full assignment building a website for what seemed to be a client in their niche without being compensated for my time. That was startling as it's obviously free work and god knows what they've done with it now. They expected me to learn a new tool, write the copy, source images that were not stock and submit the website in a week—Don't know who has the time to do such a gruelling project while working full-time elsewhere, especially not for free, but I did it anyway. It wasn't an accurate representation of my abilities for the position but rather my experience with the tool. Up until that point I thought I had done a great job and was definitely qualified for the position, but I was informed they decided to go with someone else. I asked for feedback on what I could improve on and they refused to give it to me which was odd as I've never been denied that from any other companies I've applied to. I did some more research and found some old YouTube videos they posted which made me feel like I had interviewed to work in a frat house with a bunch of frat boys based on how much they talked about beer pong and the bro culture vibes I got from watching it. Looking back at it, I'm glad I wasn't hired and I'd recommend not wasting your time interviewing with this company if you value mature co-workers, a stable career environment or being compensated for your work/time. I would also highly recommend reading some of the other reviews and asking yourself if they're genuine or if writing a positive review is part of the onboarding process.
