      Product Manager Interview

      15 Sept 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at NoRedInk

      Interview

I found NoRedInk through Diversity Tech, a job board for underrepresented folks in tech. The compensation listed on the Diversity Tech job posting was $120-$150k. After completing the initial phone screen, I was informed that-- based on my experience and location-- the actual compensation would be $105-$114k. Given my experience in tech (7+ years) and the importance of this role to the company, I declined to move forward with the interview process. While I do appreciate the significant drop in compensation was communicated early in the interview process, I felt concerned that there would be such a huge discrepancy between what was advertised (especially on a job board for underrepresented people) and what was actually being offered.

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. We are always grateful for candidate feedback on our hiring process. We post our open positions in a number of diversity focused job boards, including Diversify Tech. This job board in particular encourages companies to post salary ranges for the position, and it’s generally recommended when posting salary ranges that you avoid making it so large that it doesn't serve as guidance to candidates applying, so we posted a narrower one which was aligned with the majority of our applicants. At NoRedInk we take into consideration the market rate for the candidate’s current location, which varies across the US, when defining their salary band. Given all potential candidate locations, some outlier candidates could fall outside the default disclosed range, which happened in your case due to influence of the local market rate for the Product Manager role in your region. While we evaluate better alternatives for salary range disclosure for candidates who live in locations with a lower local market than our average applicant, we’ve decided to remove the salary ranges from the role. We’ll also continue ensuring candidates understand the salary range for the role given their local market and relevant experience on the very first touch point of the hiring process.

Gave me a take-home test that took me several hours. They told me to time box it but we all know how that goes. They then told me I was not a good fit for the job and I'm convinced all they did was steal my work.

      Interview

It's fairly involved. They required preparation of a presentation and I think another work sample. A few rounds of phone interviews. Interviews with peers and then participation in on-site exercises to test knowledge.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

This company follows a hiring philosophy called "Topgrading," which is supposed to ensure you hire only "A players." As Wikipedia describes it, at the end of the interview process, the manager tells candidates "they must organize their own reference checks from former managers....This is known as a Threat of Reference Check (TORC) and is implemented to weed out candidates who may be dishonest or who may lack motivation. The hiring manager can use these reference checks to verify the veracity of any claims made by the candidates. If a candidate fails to arrange these references, the assumption is that they are a 'low-performing' B or C Player." So if you've ever had a beef with your manager, be prepared to have a good explanation or forget it.
