I applied through university. I interviewed at Northwestern University (Chicago, IL) in Apr 2014
Interview
Professor selected me because I did well in his class. I told him I was interested and he told me about the position. This is the key thing about getting a position like this at NU. Do well in the course, get along well with the professor, and then show interest in the work.
Two rounds. The first is with the general committe members. The second is with the PI that you are specially interested in or they are interested in you. After the two interviews, they will meet and rate you based on your scores and knowledge and experience.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) in Jan 2022
Interview
It was super fast, very nice people. I actually really enjoyed the process because they shared a lot about career growth and how I can grow as a professional at this institution. I would not say the interview process was difficult at all. I had very little stress and they shared some questions with me beforehand
