After applying for a job, I swiftly progressed through the initial stages of the hiring process, culminating in a final interview. What ensued was a profoundly negative experience. The interviewer exhibited blatant bias, displaying discomfort and agitation upon meeting me (a person of color). Throughout the interview, instead of fairly assessing my qualifications, the interviewer adopted a hostile demeanor, seemingly determined to discredit and undermine me. The atmosphere was confrontational, with the interviewer employing harsh questioning tactics aimed at belittling my worth and abilities.
The interview felt more like a trial than a professional evaluation, where I was subjected to unending scrutiny, criticism, and insults regarding my intelligence and work experience. I sensed an insurmountable bias permeating the interaction. Moreover, the initial job description provided by the recruiter proved misleading, as it falsely promised a hybrid work arrangement with the option for permanent remote work. In reality, the interviewer revealed that permanent remote work was not an option and that hybrid work was contingent on their subjective assessment of my proficiency, further exacerbating the sense of bias and unfair treatment.
While the interview was still underway, I had already decided against working for the company although it seemed improbable that an offer would be extended given the hostile atmosphere and the interviewer's apparent prejudices. After the interviewer finished asking me questions, they inquired if I had any questions for them. Despite being asked if I had any questions for the interviewer, it seemed that my inquiries caught them off guard. Their responses, though lengthy, were filled with awkwardness, revealing his own lack of preparedness for the interview, despite their attempts to portray me as unprepared and unqualified.
In the aftermath of the interview, I was left feeling profoundly disrespected, deceived, and disillusioned by the entire process.
