      Events Manager Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Oscar Health (New York, NY)

      Interview

I had applied online for a different role, but the Recruiting Coordinator thought I'd be a better fit for the Events Manager role. I had a phone interview with a senior recruiter and two days later was invited to interview on-site. MTA announced ahead of time there would be significant train delays, so I made sure to give myself plenty of time to ensure that I on time. I was greeted by a friendly receptionist, then given a tour of the office and escorted to a conference room where I was told that my interviewer was running late...due to train troubles. Really? I made the effort to get there on time, but my interviewer (and future boss) couldn't? When she arrived we went over my background and I answered some STAR-based questions like "explain a time when you" or "how would you deal with." I had very little time to ask about the job itself, but figured I could just fill in those blanks with the interviewers to follow. Second interviewer was friendly but our interaction definitely felt awkward. She had a list of similar questions, but I didn't feel like she wanted to get to know me as a potential colleague. There were awkward silences and obligatory head nods and smiles. She couldn't give me specifics about the job when I asked for them. Third interviewer was kinda abrasive and literally said "I don't know why I'm here." She asked what role I'm interviewing for (really??) and would I be responsible for x, y, and z? (Umm... I think so?????). It was painful trying to come up with items to talk about, but eventually she told me about the company culture; what her role is (and how it would most likely NOT involve the Events Manager); and what she *thinks* the Event Manager would be doing. It was a pointless interview. Fourth interviewer was the culture guy and the only one who was furiously pounding away on this laptop. They use Greenhouse and it's standard to take notes, but it's still off putting. He gave a brief introduction about himself, then went through a battery of questions that felt very un-focused. Most of the questions I didn't truly understand even after asking for clarification, so I couldn't answer them as succinctly as I would have liked. There was some time leftover, so I asked him to explain what a typical day would look like and he couldn't even though he was previously in the role. I also asked about the negative aspects of the job/company and he couldn't really give specifics. Instead, he gave broad generalizations ("All startups experience..." and "No matter what company you are you will always have...") and was was quick to list how great the company is and all the amazing things he is doing culture-wise. I also asked MULTIPLE times about the work hours and I couldn't get a straight answer from him. It sounded like there would be A LOT of over time and very little work-life balance. Lastly, I met with the senior recruiter that I had spoken with over the phone. She quickly went over what I could expect in the coming days/weeks and answered some questions that I had. Then, I was escorted to the elevator. At this point, I was convinced that Oscar would not be a good fit for me, but a few days later I was invited to complete a couple of case studies. I figured why not? I have nothing to lose. There were three and I had to choose two, but they all lacked specific details that I thought would be important. I did them to the best of my ability with the information I had on hand and sent my answers back the very next day. Two weeks go by and I receive a rejection email from the senior recruiter stating they decided to go with other candidates that are a better fit. I was not upset since I had already decided Oscar would not be a good fit for me, but genuinely bewildered at how disorganized they are. The marketing team sounds like they're still trying to get their ducks in a row and haven't truly thought through the Events Manager role. I suspect the person who fills the role will be faced with a lot of tasks that were not mentioned in the job description and grasping at straws on how to actually get the job done.
