I recently had my first interview with an HR representative. It was a structured discussion, following a script with key points where I shared my knowledge and experience. The interview felt positive overall—I matched the role as it was described and provided concrete examples of how my skills and experience aligned with their requirements.
A few days later, I received a response that went beyond the standard “we’ve decided to move forward with other candidates” email. However, the feedback was vague and didn’t seem to reflect the actual conversation we had during the interview. Suspecting it might be a generic response, I replied to ask for more specific feedback, as their reasoning didn’t make sense based on the interview itself.
Unfortunately, I never received a reply. This lack of communication left a poor impression and made me question how the company values its candidates. In hindsight, I may have dodged a bullet by not moving forward with an organization that doesn’t respect candidates enough to respond to follow-up emails.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Pleo in Nov 2021
Interview
Interview process consisted of 4 steps. First there was a screening process. Then there was a take home project in Kotlin and afterwards I had to discuss my solution with some future team members. Finally there was a final interview with a hiring Manager. At the end of the process I was rejected by the hiring manager for not being senior enough for the position, although everyone else was very excited to work together, and they were very impressed by my overall performance. I would prefer if they were more straightforward from the beginning, and not lose both of our time. Overall good process though.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The screening interview was straightforward. The project was a simple integration patch to an existing payment template. I also had to discuss my thought process with the team and was asked a couple more questions about scaling problems. Finally the hiring manager asked questions about my character.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Pleo (Cape Town) in Jan 2020
Interview
Intro call, then a tech assessment that gets reviewed by their engineers, a meeting with the engineer that did the review, a team meeting and then a meeting with the hiring manager.
