      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Propel Holdings in Jul 2022

      Interview

It was an interview with 1 manager and a senior BI Analyst in 3 parts for 1.5 hours. 1. Description about the role and behavioural, experiential and SQL specific technical questions after 2. A 25-minute assessment on MySQL skills with five questions 3. Q&A Comments: The first part was pretty standard as far as questions go such as 'describe your experience and skills', 'tell us about a project you worked on' and 'describe a challenge you faced' etc. 25-minute SQL assessment: First of all I was asked to complete the questions on a google sheet with the code. In that case I thought I would write SQL queries with a general syntax the best I knew (T-SQL) for each problem. There was 5 questions and I was able to finish 4. After time was up the senior BI analyst went over the answers. It was then revealed that she was expecting me to use MySQL syntax which is slightly different from T-SQL and commented that 3 of the four questions I answered had incorrect syntax. I did proceed to explain my thinking in solving the questions and the one I couldn’t answer. The third part is where I asked a few questions to both of them to know specific details of the role. My takeaway from this interview process is: If you expect the candidate to solve the questions using a specific flavour of SQL then please use a live coding tool such as hackerrank, coderpad etc. If you ask the candidate to fill out the answers using google docs, let them know your expectation as to a specific flavour of SQL at the very least or give them some leeway on syntax while they write the code. Expecting the candidate to write correct syntax on a google doc for SQL questions is not reasonable. Having given multiple SQL assessments like this for other interviews, I felt the manager and the senior analyst did not have a clear idea of how to assess a candidate they want going by this assessment and they came across as amateurish.
