I applied online and was contacted a few weeks later to schedule a phone interview. Then, I was invited to take an assessment. The exercises asked me to demonstrate my proofreading and editing skills. The problem was, the instructions in the documents they provided (to be perfectly clear- not only the portion that I was expected to edit) had several notable grammar/style errors encompassing capitalization, a missing comma, and spacing. I was really surprised at the fact that documents which were created for the purpose of evaluating one’s ability to proofread seemed to have not been thoroughly proofread before distribution. I ended up not submitting the assessment because it gave a bad impression. It seems that this proofreading assessment is not achieving the end goal of helping them identify candidates who are skilled editors, which made the entire task feel pointless. I didn’t feel comfortable moving forward because I feared that this was a reflection of the company’s processes in general.
