I applied in-person. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at RadioShack (San Fernando, CA) in Nov 2010
Interview
Radio Shack is a recognizable name in the retail industry. It also has been on the decline in the last several years, like many other retailers. I have been in retail for 20 years and had been investigating some claims that Radio Shacks hiring practice and recruiting might have something to do with their downward sales and customer service trend. I interviewed with the DSM for another DSM position or a Store Management position with advancement possibilities. The DSM talked about sales and spifs, and payroll hour compliance. But not about customer service and achieving sales goals. He didn't give any examples of his favorite employees or mangers, and what made them successful. I didn't get a sense that he cared about his people a whole lot, or that he talked or trainned with them in the areas of marketing, sales and customer service. That made me walk into a few store and ask around. First, I challenge any of you to walk into 5 Radio Shacks in the Northern Los Angeles- SFV area and see if you are greeted and if the sales team has any passion for sales. You're probably gonna find that about 20% of the employees show any kind of enthusiasm. Secondly, ask the same 5 stores for the DSM's contact info and most recent scheduled visit date and you'll get about the same 20% informed response. I talked to one customer that said she called the DSM for a month without response on a customer service issue, that she asked to speak the DSM about. I want to shop where the sales people are inviting and knowledgeable. And I want to work either with a Team that cares or in a position where I can influence and air of caring enthusiasm and dedicated work ethic....I hate to say it, but with the exception of a few stores with passionate teams, Radio Shack to far from where is used to be.......
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
It's more so what he didn't ask or comment on. He had no testimonials from current employees. No success stories from current team members or locations. No one said anything encouraging about him. Not even his biggest managers or his own assistant. They did't say much, negative or positive.
