      Database Administrator Interview

      3 Feb 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Provo, UT
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Revere Health (Provo, UT)

      Interview

I was invited into a conference room with three individuals and asked a number of questions regarding my current employment, experience with SQL Server administration, and some basic SQL questions - all of which I did well at. I was then presented with a sheet of paper that contained a scenario where I would build a query using a few sample tables, and another sheet of paper and a pencil. I was told that they would like to see my "process". I made a go of it, but without a keyboard and mouse, I couldn't easily assemble the query (which wasn't especially hard to understand). My process always involves a keyboard and mouse. I could see the disappointment in the manager's eyes, which increased my nervousness, and after 15 minutes of this - I realized I wasn't going to get the job. They thanked me for my time, and I walked out, confused and dejected. What I realized as I was leaving was that the moment that I was asked to write a query without the tools I'm accustomed to working with - I should have walked out. I was presented with a scenario much akin to a pilot being asked to demonstrate his flying skills by riding a skateboard. It make the entire process a waste of time, and didn't represent my skills with any accuracy.
