I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Riot Games (New York, NY) in Dec 2016
Interview
Upon submitting online application, cover letter, and CV I was contacted by a HR representative for a initial phone interview with a Riot Researcher. Upon completion of the interview I was informed that I would be contacted later with concern to a 2nd interview. A few weeks later I was contacted for a 2nd interview with two Riot researchers. A few days later after the 2nd interview I received the generic rejection letter.
What I liked:
- I think the interview process is fair and appears to be working well for the company
- Riot has an amazing product and they hire people who really excel and love working there (see recent Fortune 100 best place to work article)
- The case studies were fun
- The researchers who I interviewed with are very intelligent (emotional and IQ)
What I didn't like:
- Although I liked the case studies, I felt they didn't allow me to express my research approach etc. It is difficult as an outsider (not working in the gaming industry) to solve gaming case studies without being in the trenches for a while.
- Phone interview... I think they suck and are awkward. I personally like to see someone's face etc. Given cost restrictions this could be difficult to do.. though there is skype.
Where I was lacking:
- Relevant research experience in video games (I don't think this was deal breaker though)
- I am not very good at people putting me on the spot with critical thinking question when I am not embedded
- I think more qualitative experience would have helped
Again, I want to reiterate that I think their interview process is fair and I respect their decision. However,
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Interview 1: Geared towards getting to know who I am etc. There were a few questions that were critical thinking exercises that were video game related.
Interview 2: This interview was case study based that involved critical thinking. For example, you are given fictitious scenarios and asked how you would address them.
VERY long, over 10 interviews. No take home, thankfully, but the final round required a whole day to go through 5 hours of questioning. Nothing was out of the ordinary, but it felt excessive and disappointing to not get an offer after spending what amounted to 10 hours of interviewing with different Rioters

Describe a situation where confrontation emerged internally. How did you handle it?
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Riot Games (Los Angeles, CA) in Sept 2022
Interview
I made it to 2 out of the 5 phases of the interview. I interviewed with the recruiter and one of the research team member for my technical interview. The entire process from the application submission to technical interview took about a month. I was told initially by the recruiter that I am one of the last people who is getting interviewed for the position and that everyone have been way ahead of me in the process. After that statement, I felt like the research team already knew who to pick for the role, but I stayed interviewing with them anyway. In the end, I asked for feedback but they denied my request. I applied to Riot before and what I know about them is that they are very keen in giving feedback. But I guess they changed that part of the process now. So if you like receiving feedback from interviews, don't expect it from Riot. Overall, my experience with the entire interview process was okay. The recruiter seemed enthusiastic and helpful. The technical interviewer was knowledgeable. But in my opinion, the process lacked the capacity to assess the real strength/weaknesses of a candidate.

Interview
Schedule an interview, conduct the interview, wait for response. Rinse and repeat. The process itself is straightforward, however the hiring team may get mixed up in filtering candidates even after an interview is scheduled.
