      Marketing Interview

      7 May 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Rocket Lawyer

      Interview

Disorganized and unprofessional. Weeks passed between interview stages with no communications from the company, followed by an urgent call pleading for me to come in for four hours the next day as they wanted to make an immediate hiring decision. After re-arranging my day to accommodate them, I was ushered into a glass-walled conference room, where I sat alone for a half hour. Observed the person who was my first interview sip his coffee while walking around and shooting the sh!t for 20 minutes. When he finally walked in to meet with me, he apologized for being 'stuck in a meeting'. CEO was incredibly unimpressive and turned this into an easy 'NO' for me. Arrogant and aloof at the same time. Broke out his iPad to peruse emails a couple minutes into the conversation. Tried to impress me with his smug knowledge of tactical issues that he shouldn't even care about. Poor leadership and clearly a primary cause of the company's middling progress over the years. Rest of the team was nice guys (no women) who seemed relatively earnest and intelligent. All admitted to some frustration with culture and leadership, though claim that the company finally has an intricate plan to turn the corner to reach profitability and drive significant growth. I don't buy it. All complained about micromanagement from the CEO. When I asked each of them about the company's ability to get things done, they responded that it is an area that they need to improve upon. One of the most unprofessional interview experiences I've ever had. I'm thankful, though, as it provided a very clear view that this company isn't one that I'd want to be a part of.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As this is a key leadership role on my marketing team, all candidates met cross-department colleagues and leaders they would work with to ensure both sides have chemistry. Having multiple strong candidates screening at the same time, unfortunately, added more time and I'm sorry the process felt longer than what you anticipated. We hope to take your feedback to further improve our overall process. One correction I'd like to make is that our marketing team is a good mix of all genders, who you also interviewed with. While we ended up not making a job offer to you as you already accepted at another company, we appreciated the opportunity to get to know you and wish you all the best with your new role. Interview

The whole process went smoothly. The recruiter was responsive, set clear expectations on next steps and interview style. They also kindly accommodated my requests on timing when I shared that I was interviewing with multiple companies. All the interviewers I met with dialed in on time, treated me with respect, and seemed transparent when answering my questions at the end of each call.

      Application

The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Rocket Lawyer (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2018

      Interview

I was asked by an interviewer to tell them more about myself and mentioned that I have a small child at home. I was then told by said interviewer that this might not be the best position for me because "it might require long hours and I'm sure you'd rather be at home with your child." I was very surprised that a company that claims to care about it's employees and touts work/life balance as a benefit would say such a thing during the interview process. I'm not sure if this is reflective of all departments but it certainly turned me off from this opportunity.
