Typically you apply and get an interview date. If you live a ways away, tele-interviewing, skype, etc., do happen. For counselor positions, they're trying to determine if you're interested in what you're applying for, if you're sociable, if you'll agree to work highly structured days with little off time, and if you'll sleep outside. We used to joke they'd take anyone. For Director positions, Area Director on up, your responses matter more. They want to know if you can do everything counselors do AND properly supervise. APD/PD, they want you to have vision, in addition to everything else. If you're qualified, none of these interviews should be difficult. They were all somewhat informal (still wear Class A or professional attire).
