To make a long story short, I received an offer from Social Toaster. I asked for a slight increase in salary which they approved orally. Before they sent the revised offer, for the sake of being honest and transparent I told them I was pregnant (knowing that legally I am not bound to disclose this information).
Initially I was told this would not be a problem, however they wanted to go over the benefits. In the meantime, they never sent me the revised contract and neither did they contact me to go over those benefits. I had to email twice to schedule that meeting. When I finally got there they told me I can only get 6 weeks unpaid time off (for my first child!). They cannot even offer FMLA. I left the meeting asking for an extra week or two. We left it at that: they will look into it as well as sending the revised offer. The next day I receive an email saying, and I quote: “ We really tried to see if we could make it work but we have determined that we are too small to be able to give that time off, even if is unpaid. WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST”.
They didn’t even send the revised offer and just assumed I will not want to work there! What an unprofessional way to handle things. It’s a shame that a company in the 21st century discriminates against women and perceive pregnancy as being a disability. I would not recommend any woman who is looking to build a long standing career to work in this company.
