      Software Engineer Interview

      16 Dec 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Charlotte, NC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at SolarWinds (Charlotte, NC) in Dec 2020

      Interview

Very rushed interview with two senior engineers. First 15 minutes of interview was talking about my history. Then it went into turned into trick questions extracted from the discussion that was meant to assess if you were worthy of the company or not. Very polarizing, cutthroat and pretty poor way to assess my understanding of concepts. I felt the interviewers were being rushed , lazy and didn't bother to see if I understood questions, but rather just quiz me and as in pass/fail manner. Trivia questions are the worst means of assessing technical skills. However, these were the only two questions thrown at me and other companies would at least give me more chance to assess my skills. I felt also they were looking down on me for my age and felt polarized due to that fact and the fact I was applying for a lower position. The interview was cutthroat and very much a GOTCHA and looking for ways to find weakness and deception with minimal questions. Very judgmental. I would at least respect they could be open, transparent to what they were looking for rather than putting up their phony act and assessing you based on memorizing function names rather than concepts. I pretty much could read the interviews right from the beginning and the phony friendly attitude definitely had undermines of trying to find ways of exposing weakness. Some interviews use this technique and I hate it and it shows me a lot of the attitude of the company and the team I will be working with I feel. I originally thought I was applying for junior to mid level back-end job and spent a long time talking to HR and other employee in advance. However, when interviewed they basically inferred they expected everything from data architect knowledge to front-end development and web design. It seemed like rigorous expectations, yet I was lured into the interview based on the fact they were supposedly open minded to devs coming from startups who may need some onboarding. I've interviewed at Microsoft, Oracle, F5 and a few other companies over the years. This was the worst and most condescending interview I've had to endure. At least those other companies are upfront and you don't constantly feel like you are being deceived and manipulated in the process.
