I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SpaceX (Los Angeles, CA) in May 2014
Interview
The first step with a phone interview with another member of the design team—this was relatively straightforward, asking most questions about your past experience, skillset, etc.
This was followed up by a request to complete a design exercise—imagine what an interactive elevator would look and act like. You were supposed to spend no more than 4 hours on the exercise, producing sketches and or experiences to illustrate your idea.
The next step was an onsite interview. This was broken up into multiple parts—a tour, a presentation of your reworked design exercise, followed by 1 on 1 interviews with team members which varied from a simple question/answer session to actually having to whiteboard interactive experiences.

Interview
The interviews went smoothly. It was an organized process consisting of three phone interviews and a final on site interview. The initial interview was with the in house recruiter. The following two interviews were with people the role had direct relations.

Question 1
They asked about past experiences in the field and how it will relate to the open opportunity. Since it’s a tech / manufacturing hybrid company that experience is desired.
