      Engineering Lead Interview

      13 Jul 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Starling (London, England)

      Interview

I wanted to move into a new role where I could lead on the technical direction for the frontend as well as manage a team of engineers. So I applied for the engineering lead role advertised. My first step was to have a phone call with one of the front-end leads. We had a great conversation about the direction starling wants to take and I provided a lot of suggestions on how to scale, as well as discussing my experience implementing a design system among other things. Very positive at this Point. The next phase was to build a round up feature making use of the starling public API which I found pretty neat. I spent a solid amount of time on it and handed it in. A week had passed and I had to email a follow up to see if it has been reviewed. Almost immediately I got an email saying it was good and we could progress to next phase. I feel this part could've been more attentive. I was then invited into the office to have a face to face. Soon as I arrived I spotted Anne Boden and immediately introduced myself. She is very friendly and approachable and wished me good luck. I got into the meeting room and had discussions with two backend engineers which was fine but I'd have thought at this point someone with frontend knowledge would've been there to ensure I was technically savvy. There was a bit of bitterness around monzo during our tech stack discussions. I then met with HR and a more executive member who both were nice to talk to. They explained everything around the flat structure and I asked many questions around career progression as I read it was a problem from other reviews. I was explained that they don't actually need engineering leads and I would be a software engineer which to me was a bit deceitful. I sensed a few red flags during the process and after waiting a few weeks to hear anything I decided to remain at my current role. It's a Shame as I felt I could've brought a lot to the company but there was something about it that didn't feel right to me.
