More than a month after applying, I received a phone call inviting me in for a lengthy skills test. This included proofreading, copyediting, and writing a story/feature for publication about a Texas figure, historical occurrence, landmark, public event, or place of interest. Because all testing aspects were on pen and paper, this last part was especially challenging for writers who prefer drafting/revising copy on computers. No outside resources were permitted, so researching/fact checking was not possible.
