      Engineering Manager Interview

      31 Oct 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at TimeEdit in Dec 2022

      Interview

An initial 30-minute call followed up with a 60-minute interview with the hiring manager. This interview mostly focused on team building, ways of working, and describing which challenges the company is facing. Afterward, there was a logical assessment, a personality assessment, as well as an online coding assignment (Javascript). The questions themselves were typical leet code easy/medium style questions. The final step was a take-home case consisting of preparing a presentation around 3 questions: - Career Timeline - Highly effective and performing teams - what does it take? - Engineering in a SaaS company like ours, where do you see your own profile fit? The case was presented at the company and took around 60-90 minutes. There were a couple of general questions related to the slides, other than that a lot of the focus was on their current challenges with the engineering organization. After this, they would perform a reference check and extend an offer if they wanted to proceed. Overall, it was a drawn-out process, taking a lot of calendar time to complete. Everyone was friendly and seemed competent, and the company itself and the product were interesting. But the structure of the hiring process felt disorganized and lacking. There were several times when I was told I would get feedback or information about the next step in the coming days or weeks, but this never happened, resulting in me having to email or message them to get any info. When they notified me that I would not get an offer I was not provided with any meaningful feedback other than that they felt I was not technical enough. This was quite surprising, since the only interview stage that had any technical focus was the online coding assignment, and there was no feedback or follow-up on the performance of this step. It's quite surprising that the interview process did not include any dedicated technical case or technical interview. When applying to other companies with similar roles, there would often be a step that included system design/architecture or a coding assignment that had to be presented. Additionally, I found it strange that there was no part of the interview process that included meeting the team you would manage as a part of the role.
