      ESL Teacher Interview

      Interview

Want some advice? Go find another job opportunity instead of wasting your time with VIP Kid. The company's interview process is not only a joke, but many teachers have a difficult time actually getting classes once they DO make it through the interview process. Applicants start with a short interview / demo with a staff member in China. This is relatively easy if you've prepared. You answer a few questions about your teaching experience and negotiate a pay rate. Next, you'll complete a short 10-minute class demo. If you make it through this round, you'll next complete an hour-long interview/ mock class with a current teacher. In rare cases you'll be offered the official job after this interview. Most go on to mock class 2, including myself. I had a great time in the demo and with both of my mocks.. I was blessed to have kind interviewers and mentors. I received great feedback and all three of my interviewers were very impressed. One even said "the parents are going to love you!" About 12 hours after my final interview, I received a generic automated email saying that I had an "unsuccessful mock class" and that they would no longer be pursuing my application. No results, no feedback. I was very surprised considering that I had a great time in all 3 of my interviews. I prepared for hours, made adorable props, and was goofy AF. The interviews were so fun and I couldn't stop genuinely smiling. I was really pumped to work with VIP Kid. I even joined the Vip Kid teacher group on Facebook where I learned even more about this company... Here I found out that the hiring process can be a hit or a miss for some pretty unsound reasons. Apparently after your second mock class your application will be quickly looked at by the final decision unit in China. Here they could deny you for a variety of reasons...some more valid than others. When scheduling my mock class 2, I did have to reschedule it twice (Once to change the time, then once again to change it back to the original time because of a misunderstanding; I made my changes in about 5 minutes 3 days prior to the mock class...). Perhaps they turned me down for this. I've also heard other applicants suspect discrimination based on race, gender, and age. As a young, white, female, I doubt my rejection was due to my appearance (I'm being upfront here..), though one must question if they should give time to a company that makes not-so-subtle hiring decisions based on these identify factors... They're clearly looking for the image of the "happy American" that fits within the Chinese social imaginary. While there are a few teachers of color ( though I haven't met any Chinese-American teachers... :/ ) there is an overwhelming amount of young, white, female teachers. This type of discrimination only perpetuates vapid, unvarying stereotypes of Americans and harms any sense of true cultural exchange / mutual understanding between Chinese citizens and Americans. A company that perpetuates harmful stereotypes (As a foundation for Chinese youth, nonetheless..) is a company that doesn't deserve your time.

We are currently working on streamlining the process to help our future applicants and recruitment team. We apologize for the negative experience that occurred during your application process, we are working to make sure no miscommunication happens again in the future. Race and/or ethnicity play no role in the recruitment and screening process. We have a very diverse community of teachers. You are welcome to email us to get more feedback about your interview and demo lesson performance. Our email is teachvip@vipkid.com.cn.
