      ESL Teacher Interview

      28 Jul 2017

      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at VIPKid (Toronto, ON) in Jul 2017

      Interview

First, there was an Interview and Demo Lesson. You're given time to prepare and the first part was an interview with someone in China. Here, they explain the VIPKID expectations in accordance with the brand. They are straight and to-the-point and tell you what you need to improve on and focus on for classes. After, you'll receive a grading and scoring with what your pay will be if you pass the following steps (Ie. Mock Classes). I had previous experience teaching young learners in China and being familiar with Chinese culture is important. These people are business professionals and it's ingrained in them from a very young age. It is important that Children are exposed to other cultures from a young age to be professional in their careers as they go into business and develop careers of their own. The training session after the Interview/Demo provides you with the bullet points to hit in your lessons and what is going to be assessed by the clients. While it's important that the mentor teacher likes you, ultimately, (and this is is communicated throughout the process) it is our job to make the clients happy. They're constantly asking the quesiton, "Are you suitable to teach to a critical and serious Chinese audience, while also able to provide a fun and educational environment for the children?". After Mock 1, I was approved for Intermediate level. The first mock class was the most challenging for me because before you do Mock one, you read some training literature and do a quiz. You're also provided with some videos for training. I took some tips from Youtube as well as these videos and in Mock 1, I was met with constructive criticism from my mentor. It was always respectful and they are there to guide you. But I needed to ask her why there are videos provided where teachers are barely attentive, speaking Chinese, and without energy. Her response was reasonable and it was that I needed to look at these videos with a critical eye as well and focus on improvement. I think this is the main strength of VIPKID, they are always looking to improve. The mentors first ask you for your assessment of your lesson. Any teacher who has taught knows there is no such thing as a perfect class. They take your own feedback and mirror it back to you and provide solutions to help you improve your own lessons. You should always be looking to improve yourself and to not be entitled because you have "this much education" or "this many years of teaching experience." You still need to improve and VIPKID supports this notion. My second Mock class was a lot easier and I went into it just thinking about energy and Student Talk Time. My mentor was fabulous and provided the sandwich method criticism with good things and things I needed to work on. She was very clear with the fact that Head Office makes the final decision, and went through her list of items she needed to ask me IF I was hired. It took bout 20 hours from the end of my mock class to hear back. I was reading these reviews all day to see if I could guage what to expect. I must say that the people interviewing and mentoring are CLEAR in their instruction and communication. They never guarantee anything they are there to provide guidance. If you are entitled, unable to get along with others, and unwilling to look at yourself as a flawed human then you won't be what VIPKID is looking for. STOP reading these negative reviews of people who were unsuccessful and try, apply, and do your best.
