      Technical Support Interview

      14 Feb 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at WP Engine

      Interview

I applied on their website and received a quick response. After a simple phone screening, I was invited to a local meet & greet and took a technical assessment. Then I was scheduled for an in-person interview. The first round of interviewers was normal, but the second round seemed unprepared and disinterested. One interviewer seemed almost distrustful and questioned very basic statements I made, such as that I like helping people. Whether this was intentional/standard fare for candidates or he actually didn't believe me, I couldn't tell, but it was certainly off-putting in contrast to the politeness of the other interviewers. A couple of times they asked the same, basic questions I had already answered in the first round. At one point I was asked if I had any certifications, despite them being on my resume in front of them. Overall, I got the impression that they look for very particular personalities above everything else and weren't interested in me from the start. After the interview, I was told I'd receive a response within 2-3 days. I had to reach out to the recruiter for them to immediately tell me they'd chosen another candidate.

      Interview

3 stages. Screening, technical and manager interviews. No rejection contact email or call after putting in all this time. Requested feedback, received a terse email after nearly two months advising they were still doing interviews. Recruiter seemed to be surprised by this request.

      Question 1

Describe a time where you had to give a customer bad news.

Apologies for the missed communication and how it negatively affected your experience. We want to get back to every candidate in a timely fashion and we dropped the ball on this one. (Our rejection email does come direct from Workday rather then the recruiters email, just in case that was the miss)

      Interview

Recruiting is a bit of a mess. Likely to send a rejection letter then follow up some weeks later with an invitation for an interview. Actual interview is very easy if you know what you're talking about and avoid relying on Google and Stack overflow to do your job.

      Question 1

What port is used for _? What is the purpose of _ database function or command in MySQL?

Thank you so much for your feedback, we're very sorry to hear you found the recruiting process confusing. While we can't be sure what happened in your specific case, what often happens is an applicant is qualified but we filled the role before we spoke with them. We then send the rejection letter to everyone but the hired candidate. If a new role opens, we go back to past applicants that are qualified and reach out with an opportunity to interview. We appreciate you sharing your experience and wish you the best in future endeavors.
