I applied online. I interviewed at Westran Thermal Processing (South Beloit, IL) in Nov 2019
Interview
The process started with a list of questions about why I wanted to be an engineer, complex projects I've worked on, and what type of CAD experience I had. After answering those, I was sent a mechanical knowledge test with 4 multipart engineering questions to test my basic knowledge. My contact said it was a way to verify the education level required.
After I successfully answered the test questions, I had a phone screen with my contact who described the position more and asked some question related to my personal experience and expectations. After confirming I was still interested in the position, my company contact passed his recommendation to the rest of the hiring committee and they set up a group phone interview the next week. I am not sure how many people were on the line when the time for the call came but it was at least 4-5 members of the engineering team. The interview consisted of standard interview questions, "Describe a time when you...", "How would you handle ...", etc. The group seemed laid back and let me give my full answers listening respectfully, joining me in laughing off my nervousness. After what felt like a decent interview, the next step was a Solidworks practical demonstration. They sent me a solid model for a motor and a list of requirements and asked me to design a cover for the assembly. I was on a road trip at the time of the interview but they were forgiving with time frame, giving me a week to submit my design. At this stage of the interview process, I was one of the top 10 candidates. They ended up offering the position to one of the other candidates and had told me that the next step of the process would have been flying to the location for an in-person interview/facility tour as a final step. It was a long process but only took a couple of weeks. My only critique was the amount of time from after I submitted my practical design until they let me know they chose another candidate, as it took an extra two weeks and several unanswered followup emails to get a response.

Interview
Interview was short. Asked me why I had chose engineering in school and what things I did outside of school. No difficult questions. Nice people work there. Just be prepared for engineering interview questions.
