      Payments Lead Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at bunq (Amsterdam)

      Interview

After the initial standardized test I got invited to do a role specific test. I initially applied for the lead role, but after doing the test I wasn't comfortable with continuing the process for that role and asked to do the test for another role. After doing both tests I was invited to meat the team lead. I asked hr for a salary indication and after giving some info they requested I didn't hear anything back from hr. Which kind of left a bad taste. My interview was very pleasant and the team lead seemed to be really nice and knowledgeable. We talked about salary and I stated my current salary and let them know about an offer I already have and what I would expect bunq to offer. The team lead let me know that shouldnt be a problem and also let me know I would be invited for the last round(the make a difference day). A few days later I received the email for the make a difference day, and arranged a day off with my current employer. The make a difference day was a fun experience, and the people were all really helpful. At the end the team lead let me know that they would send me an offer. After seeing some of the reviews I expected them to be on the lower end of the range I gave them, but the offer I got was lower than what I gave as my current salary(which has nice benefits as well) and would even be on the low end for someone just coming out of school. The email stated it was for the lead role, so I sort of assumed something went wrong on their side in the communication and the salary wasn't right. I wrote a lengthy email with a counter offer and let them know what I would like to make and why I felt that was fair(it was about 25% more than they offered me) . After a few days of no communication I send them another email as I had multiple offers and my preference would be to work with them and would like to make a decision. I ended up getting a reply ten days after my last email stating someone was on holiday and they felt the salary was competitive but they would be willing to work with me and make a plan to grow salary wise. I replied back that that sounds good, and I would be open to making a written plan but I also needed them to meet me in the middle on the current salary, as I'm not going to give up a job I have a permanent contract with for a 6 month contract where I make less. This was the last contact we had and they never even so much as sent out an email that that wouldn't be possible. All in all the application process was nice and slightly different. But the experience after left a really bad taste in my mouth. I basically wasted 12+ hours of my life, and even took a day of from work. I was always open about my salary expectations and after the interview I felt that we were on the same page. If they were just open about it then and said:'ok, we can't do that, but this is what we can do', I might have even considered working there for less. My advice to bunq would be to just be open about what they can and can't offer, it's not like people will all of a sudden change their mind about what they want to earn. And at least have the decency to reply to emails after somebody invested a lot of time in their application process.
