      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at what. in Jun 2023

      Interview

After some reflection, I've decided to share my interview experience to provide insight into the process. The initial requirement was to record a video introduction, followed by a HR screening call. The HR interview included some questions that seemed unrelated to the job at hand. There were some misunderstandings as well during this call, and I had the feeling that I wasn't really listened to. The company also required completion of a preliminary, unpaid, task, which involved several setup steps even before starting working on it: including signing an NDA, using a dedicated email and Slack channel (you can't use your own), interacting with multiple people unrelevant to the interview, and configuring a development environment, in their way, on GitLab. These preliminary steps were quite time-intensive. Especially if you're used to just using GitHub, which has the 82.94% share of the market for a reason. But I get it, it's fun to pose as nonconformists. During the entire ordeal, there were administrative errors such as scheduling mix-ups and miscommunications, which caused some delays and awkward situations, that I can't mention in detail in a public review. The technical part of the interview seemed to not fully utilize the opportunity to gauge my expertise, focusing on the trivial basics of the average "jack of all trades" (that does everything, but does it in a mediocre way) rather than more complex skills. After a considerable investment of time, I received a copy-pasted template rejection without specific feedback, following a prompt from me. As a busy freelancer, I found the lack of proactive communication to be less than ideal. Also, the copy-pasted message was referring to a step I actually passed in the interview, so clearly there was a lack of attention there, or just lazyness. I also want to mention that the dev env. where I did my test task, was a quite messy website, and deployed some low-quality plugins, which true WP experts know they must be avoided. Keep in mind that this wasn't for a true job, just a freelancing agreement. The position turned out to be with non-guaranteed work, which was only clarified at the final stages of the interview process. While the experience itself was not as expected, I hope this feedback can be constructive and that my experience might inform others considering opportunities with the company.
