Pros

The office will close if it’s snowing. There was one nice person in the NY office. That’s really it. Nothing else.

Cons

Everything. They are cheap. Won’t pay for you to take a car home at 10pm, overtime meals, etc. Lunch hour is not included in compensation. The people are incredibly rude, demanding, and demeaning. Never received a kind word, and the work was not fulfilling. It was easy. They are consumed by form over substance. Learned absolutely nothing. Actually became morbidly depressed working here. There are cockroaches and they never fix anything. The building really is dumpy. You will work there for a year and never meet your team or manager if you are in a satellite office. No one will talk to you. Attorneys refuse to make eye contact with staff. Your manager won’t even wish you happy birthday. It is the worst place I’ve ever worked.

Pros

Great modern offices (Los Angeles), very nice coworkers, great managing partner, good location downtown, very diverse and minority and female friendly, down-to-earth feel.

Cons

The firm is basically managed by partners in Florida, and even though the offices in LA are very liberal, the powers that be in Florida are not. The health insurance plans for individuals just more than doubled, vacation is average, salaries are low (bonuses are jokingly small and both bonuses and raises are based on time not performance).

Pros

An excellent firm. Great benefits, great access to resources. Smart attorneys. You will have people from all different offices reaching out to you when you first start, to make sure you are settling in well.

Cons

They don’t pay as high as law firms of similar status, and there were MANY layoffs due to “COVID” but, on to THE REAL ISSUE. The Houston office (one practice group in particular), is absolute Hell. Seriously, it’s not worth working at Akerman if you will have to be in the Houston office. A great firm marred by a small group of people—it’s unfortunate. 99% of the Houston office was part of a different firm before—they are all used to each other and very set in the ways of their old firm. They have not (and seem to be very reluctant to) adapted to the Akerman way/culture. They will expect you to know everything and do everything exactly how they have been doing it, without any training in that regard. And if you’re a minority, don’t even bother. Your mental health (and work) will likely suffer. There are some great people here, but overall it’s not worth it.
