Pros

Though I was at Avail a short time, I can wholeheartedly say that my co-workers were the best part of the job. The majority of the company is made up of incredibly smart individuals who are also genuine, caring humans. The work itself was rewarding. I was able to have a large impact from day one since the company is very small (the marketing team only had 4-6 people while I was there). It was a very flexible job. The unlimited PTO is great, but only if you use it.

Cons

Management is abysmal at best, and there is no HR department. Overall, management has a very “old boys club” feel that progressively got worse in my short time with the company. Just be aware, if you have issues and try to bring them forward like an adult, your concerns will be ignored. The management of the marketing team specifically is the most problematic of it all, and the co-founders encourage it. If you are looking for a supportive, empathetic, employee-first environment, you will not find it at Avail. From my personal experience, I can confidently say, if you’re a strong-willed female who calls out problems within the company, you won’t last long here. Upper management wants a team of “yes mans” who will do whatever it takes regardless of the consequences. Aside from the management, I was completely misled when I was hired. I was promised the company was getting everyone 401(k)s within the first few months of me starting, then it was pushed, then pushed back again. As far as I know, the company still doesn’t have plans for 401(k)s. The healthcare is also lacking. The company only covers 25% and they do not offer dental or vision.

Pros

- Coworkers were smart, fun, and driven - Unlimited PTO (back when I was there) - WFH and ability to work in nearby cafes, shops - Interesting downtown area - Casual dress - Some educational opportunities

Cons

The marketing team, which I was a part of, was treated very poorly when I worked at Avail. I think we had the highest turnover rate at the time because people got out quickly once they saw how things would be. - Management made it clear that the work we did wasn't valued, whether you were an analyst, writer, or email marketer. We'd meet a goal and still get berated. - It was a constant struggle to keep control of marketing efforts and ensure quality work went out. A certain co-founder always had "better ideas" even though we were hired for our content and strategy expertise. - There was a lot of inappropriate behavior from certain higher-ups. Race comments, gender comments, etc. Employees constantly asked them to hire an HR rep. To which they said, "What do you think HR is going to do?" - There was a ton of gaslighting. We'd receive angry emails and comments about an issue for weeks — and then one day management would suddenly say there was no problem and ask why we were so stressed. - Morale was always low. We brought up all these issues time and again. They'd purport to listen and make assurances, but never followed through with changes. I hope things have improved since then, but I couldn't recommend it based on my experience.

Pros

There's lot's to work on here, you'll never be bored. It's a small-ish company so you have the opportunity to make a huge impact day 1. There is a lot of care taken about how the personality of each new hire fits into the culture which is really refreshing.

Cons

Because of it's small size, some project feel a little wild-west like. This is not entirely a bad thing if you thrive on chaos, can think on your feet and adapt.
