To succeed at this firm, you’ll have to be a very agreeable person, put your head down, and be willing to work long hours and sacrifice your personal life for the partners’ benefit. I’m not just talking about the spring busy season. Since this firm experiences high turnover, you will often have to pick up the workload of terminated employees throughout the year, and little to no empathy will be given to you for having to bear a heavier workload.
The audit partners have an archaic management style that no doubt they picked up from their predecessors that they looked up to, which is a struggle for many young staff to work under. During my year as a senior audit manager at Baldwin CPAs, I received numerous complaints about how hard it is to work under them, and all I could do was sympathize. There is nothing that can be done to fix the situation since they are owners of the firm. You either have to find a way to get along with them, or just part ways. There is no other option.
Training opportunities are poor. Training at Baldwin CPAs is basically just watching some videos. Coming out of college, I would encourage you to seek out a firm that has the resources to truly develop you into a talented audit staff. If you were a bright student who received multiple offers out of college, I would encourage you to pick the other offer at a better firm so you can get the training and development you need coming out of college.
You need to know that Baldwin CPAs’ general attitude toward their employees is that they are expendable. I have seen the partners let talented employees who have worked at Baldwin CPAs up to 10 years or more just walk out the door without making any effort to keep them due to an extraordinary level of pride the partners have. They will not bargain or make any concessions to keep long-time employees because they believe they can easily replace them. Truth is, they cannot, and the whole audit practice suffers as result.
Also, the firm refuses to cover family health insurance, they will only cover their employees. So, if you have any plans to start a family, you may want to rethink working here as health insurance costs for a family here are totally unaffordable. This firm is perfectly content with burning through single, new college graduates, or relying on older individuals without any kids at home to cover their workforce needs.
