- The management is generally approachable, and they pride themselves on creating a "family" atmosphere. - The pay and benefits are decent for a company of this size. - The atmosphere is fairly relaxed and casual for an industry that has a reputation of being formal and stuffy. - They offer good opportunities for training, development, and education.
Cons
- For all the talk about the "Baltimore Life family," the atmosphere is very cliquey and people will turn on each other without warning or explanation. The insane turnover rate among the agency force demonstrates how dysfunctional the "family" can be at times. - The current CEO is the former CFO, and every decision throughout the organization is based on dollars and cents. Popular morale-building and image-boosting programs (a wellness/fitness program, offsite annual meetings, charitable participation, and others) have been eliminated or drastically scaled back in recent years. Long-term employees have been bought out or forced out, and the resulting talent drain has also damaged morale. - Management has little knowledge of, or interest in, the corporate landscape beyond the narrow market in which they operate. They are far behind the times in using modern marketing techniques and ideas to reach new customers.
