A Cybersecurity Puppy Mill

Pros

Bancsec's catalog of clients are typically great to work with, with a majority of clients caring about Cybersecurity. Engagements are onsite with travel, and it can be fun to visit new cities and locations in the country, As a pentester, you are thrown into the fire almost immediately, and you get a lot of exposure to all facets of Cybersecurity. If you are a fast learner, there is definitely a lot to gain and grow from after each assessment. Since all clients are financial institutions, you also learn about banking and information security.

Cons

The compensation offered does not meet the expectations of the job. Upper management favors hiring low skilled workers for low wages. Scheduling and travel can be tough during the busy months of the year (May, June, October, November) and upper management struggles to hire more to keep up with the demand. Infrastructure and processes are outdated, and there is a lot of admin work that is left to the consultant. Consultants are expected to act as their own project managers and can be overwhelming when assigned multiple assessments a week.

Pros

Great pay if you know how to negotiate. Great chance to learn a lot and fast. The clients are typically awesome to work with. There is a lot of travel and you will see a lot of the country. Fully remote culture. They mean it, too, as long as you get your work done. Co-workers are awesome. Some of the best I have ever worked with. Business is stable and growing. Job stability looks good.

Cons

Company is completely lacking from a management point view. Documents and SOP's are dated with no one to maintain them. Consultants have to do everything from client communications, planning travel, all while handling engagements and report writing. Engagements are typically hybrid remote/on-site and you will have overlapping engagements all while traveling 50%+. There was a sudden change in management but it only widened an already existing gap. It all fell on the workers to keep things together.

Pros

The benefits package was decent enough. A few people there are genuinely good at what they do, though most have moved on.

Cons

I took this job thinking I'd have real ownership and actual autonomy — turned out that was just words on the job posting. Everything required multiple approval layers and constant check-ins that made it abundantly clear nobody actually trusted me, which is honestly pretty insulting when you've been doing this for years. You'd bring something to them, they'd want revisions without ever really explaining why, then ask you to redo it again, and it's like listening to someone hear what you said but completely miss the point. The freedom I supposedly had in the role didn't match anything in reality, and by month six I'd completely given up trying to prove myself because it was never going to be enough anyway. It's just exhausting being managed like you're some junior hire who needs constant oversight.
