Talents should stay away

Pros

There are nice people working in this company. But I can't help but feel like they are suffering from Stockholm syndrome..i.e. worked for this crappy company for so long, don't know if there are better ones out there, and stay working for their abusers. There are only two kinds of people working here: New Hires (Less than 2 years old) or people who worked here their whole lives (Stockholm syndrome robots). Ok other pros... well the meager pay was always on time.

Cons

Like another reviewer said on this forum, Phil Feldsine likes to shout expletives and is generally very condescending and disrespectful. The unfortunate thing is because of the company's size, there is no HR department to keep him in check. This creates an environment of negativity and toxicity. There were times when I would drive to work in the morning and sit in the car with waves of nausea washing over me. If you are capable and talented, do not be tempted to take a job with this company. Look elsewhere. Even if you are old and unemployed, think twice before accepting an offer. Once you get sucked into this environment, it will take more effort to return to a clean and untainted state. Do not run around with this company, trust me your therapy bill will end up costing more than your pay check.

Like leaving an abusive relationship

Pros

Many of the employees are genuinely good to work with. Food safety is a fairly stable industry, and Biocontrol experiences little of the upswings and downturns found in the biotech industry in general.

Cons

Biocontrol has a deeply abusive culture, lead and exemplified by its CEO, Phil Feldsine. He literally screams expletives at senior and mid-level staff on a daily basis. It is important to understand that this is not hyperbole, but the center of a toxic environment that has sunk the entire company into a posture of constant fear and flinching whenever problems arise. The best managers are the ones who can shield those who report to them from the constant barrage of negative motivation. The worst are like flags, blowing in whatever direction the fumes from Feldsine's office are blowing that day. There is no tradition of positive reinforcement, no chance of career opportunities or advancement within the company. Pay is poor and annual increases for top performers barely keeps pace with inflation. There is only Feldsine's profit, and staying off his radar to minimize the abuse. Avoid this company at all costs if you value your mental and emotional health. The day I left was among the happiest of my life.

Pros

Independent work load/pace. Most staff was very nice and personable. Work was enjoyable.

Cons

HR manager told me she was going to move because she didn't like gay marriage. CEO was incredibly rude the one time I met him.
