Pros

Lots of smart people, good pay, nice place to live, mostly interesting work. Lots of leeway to make things happen if something isn't up to your standards. Overall just a very good place to work.

Cons

Non-engineering skills are undervalued by those running the company, and the employees suffer for it sometimes. In particular the top people are good engineers and scientists but mostly mediocre managers, but aren't the kind of people that are willing to relinquish control and focus on strengths. Also the company has evolved so that there is no common set of goals that leadership is likely to ever agree on.

Pros

You can work on the cutting edge of technology, albeit in a small environment. Technical leaders have their pulse on the industry and are very eager to try the latest languages, frameworks, approaches. The work is (mostly) cleared Defense work; the company is pursuing commercial opportunities - a good move, in my opinion. There are endless opportunities, especially for research driven work. Compensation is good for the area. You will wear as many hats as you want.

Cons

There isn't enough business driven work to keep me satisfied. I'm less interested in the research side of things, but that's just me. The management are all current engineers and don't manage as effectively as I believe more business-oriented managers could.

Pros

- Great for fresh graduates and veterans - Some excellent managers

Cons

- Work from home is limited due to the nature of the work, and there doesn't seem to be any way to change this. - Recent acquisition by General Atomics led to the replacement of their formerly excellent retirement and HSA programs with more average 401k and FSA programs. - Long-time employees in leadership positions are prone to hacking some buggy solution together over the weekend and then dropping it on the worker bees to maintain with no documentation. - Working in a windowless room starts to grate on the soul. - Management tends to promise the world to clients and then expects the workers just figure it out,

Thank you for taking the time to review your time at GA-CCRi, and we hope that some of the changes we’ve been able to make will assuage any of the concerns you have listed here. - The customers and systems we support are operationally critical and require safeguarding. This means that much of the work we do needs to be done in a secure facility. However, GA-CCRi has taken multiple actions to expand the work from home opportunities and every employee at GA-CCRi has the opportunity to work from home for some portion of their work-week. When work does need to happen on-site, We are confident that our upcoming move to 3twenty3 in downtown Charlottesville will provide an even more comfortable, collaborative environment for all our employees. - We’ve been working closely with GA to update the HSA policy, and we are likely to have that in place in early 2023. - Quite often, and due to the nature of our products, we are asked to provide immediate solutions to real-time problems that are critical to operations occurring around the globe. We recognize the need to improve our development processes to account for these unforeseen and highly-dynamic instances which is why we’re looking forward to slowing down a bit and doing more engineering planning as part of our commitment to Agile development processes. In this quarter, we have several planning tickets that are blocks of time to prototype and document solutions that will only be developed in the following quarter. - We want to make sure that our new secure space accounts for natural light to make work more enjoyable - we’ve got it in the plans for 3twenty3! - We are in a unique position, because we are solving real world, mission critical problems. With that, there can be some unknowns. We hire the best people, and give them the autonomy to develop creative solutions.
