Pros

Most of the people at the company are friendly and want to help you succeed.

Cons

- Legacy code and home-spun solutions that don’t adhere to industry standards. Even a small library like express is rejected in favor of an in-house solution. This has lead to an ever-accumulating level of technical debt and discrepancies against industry standards and practices. - Insane tech team turnover. Git blame is littered with names of people who you’ll never hear about. - GitHub comments as a metric of success. Comments on your PR = bad performance, which is hilariously backwards and only serves to make pushing sub-par code the norm without a formal review process and/or feedback from others. - Upper management is incredibly disconnected. You’re expected to read their mind and predict outcomes with no prior exposure. - Unrealistic expectations and ramp up time for new engineers dealing with institutional knowledge and the codebase.

- Takes care of their employees, through benefits, unlimited sick time, flexible PTO, & competitive compensation. - Small team = big opportunities for impact - Always improving. Consistently testing new tools, patterns, and functionality. - Remote, twice-annual team retreats, collaborative and engaging culture

Cons

- Plenty of legacy code can make it hard to move quickly - The team can be reluctant to give critical feedback

Pros

- Small, intelligent, driven team. - Bootstrapped and profitable so we don't have to worry about mass layoffs - Kind and inspirational leadership who foster a culture of psychological safety. There are no silly questions. - Company retreats twice a year. We went to Japan in May 2023 - Trust and autonomy to own your part of the business

Cons

- Remote work isn't for everyone. We have meetings and processes in place to ensure the team is connecting but I personally struggle with the "isolation" aspect of remote work. So I need to make sure I am taking responsibility for that and reaching out to team members more often than some to connect. - Trust and autonomy are great, but it also means you must be a self-starter and own your outcomes. While most people think they want this, it isn't for everyone. Not everyone thrives with autonomy as someone people like clear direction on tasks. At Canny you design and execute your own work.
