Going downhill

Pros

Fully remote, good benefits like unlimited PTO (if you can take it) and little to no micromanaging on the side of the org I worked in which makes you feel trusted and not treated like a child. People are friendly. I enjoyed my team. But upper management is destroying the culture.

Cons

The company got a new CEO in 2024 and he is taking the culture away from the company. People seem a lot more stressed/pressured less happy to work there, they have made a ton of staffing cuts/lay-offs over the last year or so. Pay is not up to par, they don't give many wage increases and when they do it's small, they're not hitting sales quotas, insurance plans skyrocketed and they're having a lot of turnover in the sales department. Not much diversity within the company. They have halted most hiring and made recent lay-offs, which indicates things are not going well for them. Also got a new HR person within the last 6 months who is very cold, rude and isn't very knowledgeable in the position, she is snippy and gives out a lot of incorrect information.

Good work/life balance, poor culture

Pros

Good work/life balance, employees are encouraged to take time off (unlimited), flexibility with family obligations.

Cons

- The insurance is expensive and the coverage is mediocre (Cigna). Rates went up again this year, and they don’t do cost of living increases so everyone essentially got a pay cut. - The company was founded by a group of Mormons, and those values are deeply rooted in the culture. While people are generally nice, unless you’re a cis man or Christian in some font, be prepared to feel excluded/othered. There are no ERGs, pride month is not acknowledged, women tend to land in supporting roles, etc. I don’t think it’s intentional, but it’s still an issue. - Leaders make religious references and tell stories about god saving them from plane crashes and discuss their church youth groups/missions frequently. If conversations around religion are triggering for you, you may be better off going somewhere else. - Although it’s somewhat normal for this size company, speed often takes priority over organization and planning. Partnerships, releases, etc. get announced and scheduled without adequate planning and project management resulting in a lot of last minute scrambling and lack of clarity.

Pros

Work from home, people can be nice, unlimited PTO

Cons

Company can't figure out how to accomplish engineering goals and is currently tightening the purse strings. Only one US based engineering team that has no clear direction. Agile is virtually non-existent. Every engineer is hired as "senior", even if they are junior level. They will get rid of engineers without PIPs, feedback, anything. 4 engineers fired from this team in about a year and a half. Also, they harp on not working evenings, weekends, holidays, but management is constantly setting this expectation! No room for career development with this company, if you don't fit their "culture", they'll get rid of you.
