Pros

Pay is competitive and perks are good!

Cons

It's hard when you feel like the only option is writing a glassdoor review to make sure that no one else gets manipulated or harmed by this company. Unfortunately working for this company has completely tarnished my ability to want to work at a startup again because I cannot get into another situation like this one. The CEO does not reveal that he is married to the head of HR until after you start working there. She is disguised as Head of Operations (Zoe) but the only People Ops person they have reports directly to her. HR is basically just a paper pusher to get things done and can't actually help you in anyway because all notes get sent back to the CEO and his wife. They have fired multiple people over them asking for more work life balance or have pushed people to their limits. They don't care about you as a human being but only what is in it for them. The head of finance is a good guy but he is also best friends with the CEO so no one really tells the CEO no when he wants to spend thousands of dollars on lavish dinners and outings. If you push back about anything, they will force you into quitting or will fire you. Just take a look at all of the people on LinkedIn who have only worked for this company for a year or less. They are just not good people. They make it seem like they are making the world a better place and helping freelancers get to work for themselves but they just want to build a product they can sell and make more money off it. It's really disheartening and sad and I'm only writing this review because they make sure their current employees write good things about them on linkedin, twitter, etc on company time. Anytime a new product was launched we would have to spend company time writing good reviews about it so it became number one on product hunt, they also force people to write good things about Contra on LinkedIn.

Pros

On the surface, Contra is a great opportunity. Great pay, decent benefits, cool off-site meetups. Amazing low-level team - incredibly smart co-workers. Opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology and a decent amount of autonomy in decision-making and engineering solutions.

Cons

CEO is married to head of HR - something you don't find out until 6+ months after you're employed. Leadership knows (and is open about) the fact that tech is oversaturated right now and jobs are highly competitive - so the current roster is more or less stuck. They use this to their advantage to constantly shift goalposts with an ever-changing priority list – everything is always a priority. Engineering staff are burning out and celebrated for pushing beyond their limits. A memorable event was when one team member made a visit to the ER for stress-related symptoms - only to return to work hours later - something they were publicly applauded for. What kind of message does that send to the employee and the rest of the team?

Pros

- Team. For the most part is made up of great people who do amazing work. - Benefits. US based benefits are good. - Tech stack. New and exciting technologies and engineering isn't afraid to try new things. - Remote.

Cons

- HR / C-level management conflict of interest. - C-level management inability to self reflect and take feedback. - Work life balance. - Benefits for non-US based employees are lacking. - Any expression of being "unhappy" is guaranteed to put you one foot out the door. - Must drink the kool-aid.
