Pros

I had a great direct supervisor.

Cons

Even though I really enjoyed working with my direct supervisor, my experience at DOROT suffered due to the upper level executives. For example, I had a few run ins with the CFO. She was incredibly unkind and cold. I witnessed the way she spoke to people on her team and it was unacceptable. Once I heard her yelling through her door at an employee while others were around to hear. Every time I encountered her, she was incredibly miserable and unnecessarily unkind. Behavior and actions like these are not considered best practices. The executive director actually seems like an overall great addition to DOROT, so I think he needs to evaluate the actions of the CFO and upper level management as there are MANY examples similar to the one I expressed above. Also, the turnover at DOROT is like nothing I’ve ever seen for a small company. The reason for such high turnover isn’t the work, it’s the way employees are being treated by upper level management and the ones who are leading the entire team.

Pros

The organization does wonderful work! I truly enjoyed the fact that we helped seniors and intergenerational relationships are incredibly important but having a horrible work environment ruined the experience for me.

Cons

From my first day at DOROT, my immediate supervisor chastised me and told me how horrible my (strategic and on-mission) ideas were. She treated everyone on my team with complete disrespect and like we were all idiots. Everything was her way or no way and she was flat our cruel. I spoke with HR multiple times and the Executive Director. The Exec Director did nothing about it while I was there. I absolutely dreaded going to work everyday because of the terror this manager put her team through.

Mushroom management

Pros

The organization cares about its clients.

Cons

The organization does not, however, care about its employees, and for that reason, cannot be called a good organization. Management is toxic and lacks any transparency, and makes decisions without any care for the well-being of the employees. Certain departments work a calm 9-5 day, while others work large amounts of uncompensated overtime to keep up with unreasonable demands from leadership. Employee feedback is ignored, often to the detriment of programming. The reward for all of this is little to no upward mobility and compensation below the industry standard.
