1. Company has been bought and sold several times, company has no real identity and those employees who have been there for decades are still stuck in the 1980s. Current owner, TBG Holdings, Inc., has no clue what to do with DTN and its obvious.
2. Software as well as mentality of those who have worked decades at DTN is antiquated (i.e. employees can’t be trusted so must micromanage, exempt/salaried employees treated like they are hourly - 15 minutes late back from lunch, make that time up, doesn't matter that you are working 60 hours a week! ) .
3. Several of the vice presidents, directors and managers have been at DTN for decades and still stuck in the 1980’s mentality (i.e. Flex Time = making direct reports work ALL THE TIME – 60-hour weeks are the norm, expecting employees to do management's personal errands, and not even remotely close to keeping up with current technology).
4. Very much a “Do as I say, not as I do” environment with management – see #3.
5. Bullying, hostile work environment (announcing to entire staff when a team member makes a mistake, threatening direct reports with firing when they work/talk to the enemy i.e. other departments within the company) and abusing direct reports are commonplace - see #3.
6. Covering up all and any issues while CEO and board are on site. Sweep all problems under the rug and pretend everyone is happy and it's the perfect place to work – see #3 and #7.
7. Physical assaults (yes, you read correctly) on direct reports are rewarded with promotions.
8. Retaliation is rampant, especially if anyone goes to HR with issues – see #3.
9. Snarky remarks to employees are frequent with the caveat "it's okay. We can say to those things to each other. We've worked with each other so long, we're like family!" - see #3.
Note: If you are considering working at DTN, remember working around that kind of hostility will make you worse at your job — you will become fearful, which inhibits initiative, creativity, focus, and other things that help people do well at work. Plus, you won’t be getting the kind of feedback and mentoring that will help you develop professionally and help build your reputation.
