Pros

You get to work on some of the most exciting things in Government. The work is fast paced, the Department is on the younger, more dynamic side, and you get to work often with very smart people who are passionate about what they do.

Cons

Experiences can vary hugely depending on your team and your line manager. Poor line managers abound. Team cultures can vary from excellent and supportive to toxic. If you are interested in a role it's work trying to speak with someone in that team first to get a feel for it. Some roles have massive responsibility and massive workloads but you're paid the same as someone in a quieter policy area with less work and less responsibility. Luck of the draw again depending on role and team.... Find a good one!

Pros

The department, being newly established, fosters a positive team culture that prioritizes work-life balance. Colleagues are genuinely friendly and supportive, and you get the opportunity to work on interesting projects in cutting-edge areas like AI, quantum, and space. The portfolio is current, reflecting hot topics, and there's an international dimension.

Cons

However, the downside is the inadequate pay, and valuable talent often leaves since there's no viable way to advance on the pay scale within the team. Additionally, the department experiences structural duplications and overlaps with other government departments, leading to a sense that fewer individuals could potentially handle the same tasks for better compensation.
