Pros

DI can be a good place to launch a creative career, and you get to work with a lot of incredibly talented and hard working people. It’s easy to make connections and friends, and I always felt like it was a team effort to get projects to the finish line. Leaving was bittersweet, but culture shifts and low compensation outweighed staying.

Cons

The creativity and fun you can have at DI can been very rewarding, but that can be a double edged sword for creatives. The pressure to create never-been-done-before experiences requires a lot of energy that might not leave room for any of your own personal creative practices. Creatives are also expected to do several different types of work to fit each unique project’s needs through the design process, so be prepared to be flexible and for a big process learning curve. Pleasing clients is also a top priority to help ensure fabrication scope is won, so that can mean routinely turning work around for tight deadlines without overtime compensation for salaried positions. After 8 years of employment and a substantial promotion my pay increase was minimal. I felt taken for granted, and got nowhere even after attempting to negotiate. That paired with a culture shift to be more focused on growth and profit signaled it was time to move on. I think DI can be a decent place to work, but depending on your compensation and work/life goals it may not be a long term career option.

Pros

The fact that "Free Lunch Fridays" is the only pro says a lot. One could argue that the pro is "touching cool" projects. One would then have to argue touching "cool, failing projects".

Cons

Management and leadership is laughable. The design studio can be likened to a high school cafeteria. It is riddled with egos and a lack of real leadership. Work/life balance is non-existence. If you're a designer - run! Run as fast as you can. This is NOT the place you want to work - especially if you have any real experience. This place is perfect for beginners who want to "learn". The only problem is as they "learn", they will be inevitably tainted by the "seasoned professionals". The pay is much lower than average. This place brags about diversity: If you're a person of color, female, etc - simply go to the IG page: You'll laugh at the diversity. In all seriousness - there are much better places to work in the city. If the world class clients that this company cons knew everything that goes on beyond the DI veil, they'd reconsider working with them.

With any and all criticism in life, it’s important to ask what in this critique is fair and what isn’t, and what role did we did we all play. We live in a world where everyone is accountable for their words and actions, including leadership. And, I prefer it that way. I sincerely wish that you would have spoken up to me directly while you were here with your concerns. Still, we will take your feedback seriously and work to get better as a team. My door is still open if you are serious about helping us get better.

Pros

The coworkers I had were exceptionally talented, highly motivated, and a pleasure to work with. Projects were usually interesting. If you're a recent graduate, you can build an expansive portfolio quickly by working at DI.

Cons

DI has a very high turnover rate. Compensation is far less than average, and projects always have completely unrealistic timelines. There is no compensation for overtime and crunch, which are both routine and expected. DI justifies low compensation for new hires by saying that the work is unique. This leads to low morale, crunch, and very quick burnout leading to turnover. Company loyalty is a one-way concept. DI recently laid off an entire department with no warning - including an employee who was in the process of moving across the country to work at DI! Execs will brag about the company's success and financial milestones and outright refuse to give annual raises higher than 3%. Also, employees who receive promotions often do not receive additional compensation for taking on more work. If you are a designer or software developer, you can make twice as much working remotely at other companies.
