Pros

Good CEO; Good benefits; cleaner factory; overall good salaried and hourly employees - despite being a Unionized workforce.

Cons

Bad employee relations at Kingsport Mill mostly due to current and inept mill leadership. Specifically there is deviant and deceptive practices practiced by mill management and hr management, and are the new norm. Culture of mis-trust permeates in mill meetings and on the plant floor. Arrogant mill management (corrupted by new powers) and aloof, unavailable HR management at Kingsport - both turn a lot of folks off. Employee strife and discord are rampant - behind the scenes or behind the glass door. Both bad hourly and salaried relations are mostly covered up to Corporate Domtar team - despite routine or regular 800 number breach of ethics calls by employees - based on poor ethics; Deceptive management practices are the new common way to get rid of supervisors, managers and employees. It is also a favorites' type compensation system at Kingsport - there are plenty of examples where it is NOT based on mill department performance but who their favorites/cronies are at any time. If you are desperate and local to Kingsport, then this may be the place for you have to work but if not, run the other way... there are much better mill/factory cultures out there for principled folks that value straight-dealing, honesty and work/life balance.

Used to be a Great place to work

Pros

Pay is very good, overtime is mandatory due to not hiring enough employees. I'm gonna hit 1000 hours 3rd year in a row.

Cons

I have worked for Domtar for nearly six years. Domtar Kingsport used to be a good place to work. About three years ago a new group of management took over and the mill has being going down ever since. They refuse to listen to hourly employees on anything. They blame hourly for the woes of the mill despite the mills safety record being exemplary prior to their take over. Since they came we have had record numbers of people getting hurt. Mostly due to being worked nonstop. The average number of hours worked is over 600 at the halfway point of the year. The salaried people are treated no better by upper management. They will promise you a job and than replace you without warning. One person brought in as a trainer was replaced than fired after only a month despite being promised a permanent position. Three other similar stories could be told for this year alone. The upper management make back door deals to get their friends into cushy positions and do not promote based on if it's deserved. Every negative mentioned in other reviews is doubly true for the Kingsport Mill. Bottom line, Do not trust the salaried offers to work here and only consider an hourly job if you wish to give up safety, time off, and any way of life. You won't get that here.
