Pros

- ETR is a values-based organization and that is apparent in all of the work we do. I've never worked at a place that was so committed to advancing health equity and improving health outcomes. I love knowing that my work has a significant impact in communities across the country. - I love the diversity of projects and expertise at ETR. It's incredible to be in an environment where you work alongside researchers, behavioral scientists, trainers, designers, sales representatives, web developers, and customer service staff all within a single day - ETR provides incredible employee benefits. In addition to "the usual", there are a number of ways that staff are encouraged to prioritize well-being, both at work and at home. It's by far the most family-friendly job I've ever had!

Cons

Some projects are currently understaffed, but the leadership team is actively looking at building additional infrastructure to bring on new roles and supports.

Pros

Having a manager who held the line in shedding light on structural racism, sexism, nepotism and actually believed me when I reported abusive work dynamics and unethical behavior.

Cons

Working at ETR was the most traumatizing work experience I have ever had. I reported unethical behavior my department Director was engaged in, to the CEO and HR, only to be gaslit and have no follow-through in holding the Director accountable. Many female employees, including myself, worked with male counterparts who received credit for the work we produced. There is an employee that everyone (from leadership to entry-level employees) knows as being unqualified and incompetent but is related to a senior leader, so he has been able to advance within the organization. This type of nepotism has become normalized at ETR by HR poorly justifying it through weak policies describing ETR as "A family-friendly place to work." I sincerely believed the CEO when she told me that she cared about women of color. The majority of individuals who have left due to the toxic work culture at ETR are women, and the majority are women of color. The CEO continues to blame the "great covid resignation" for these departures rather than addressing the abusive dynamics at every level of the organization. Please think again if you are considering this very performative organization!

Pros

Staff on our team are the most talented, dedicated, passionate, hardworking, and equity-focused people I have ever worked with. They are all leaving to work at organizations that don't gaslight them when they call for transparency and inclusion.

Cons

The leadership team isn't interested in equitable practices or anti-racism, they just like to say they are. They sweep gross misconduct from leadership under the rug until the only people left are those benefiting from the lack of accountability or integrity. It's odd that they recruit new staff who are passionate about social justice and dismantling systems of oppression and when those staff call out injustice, they are maligned and left with no choice but to shut up or leave. There is little to no support for staff who produce work that actually fulfills our mission, not to mention, maintains our funding. I've seen time and time again women, especially women of color, propping up incompetent men who make more money than they do. Staff are dropping like flies, not because of the pandemic (which is the excuse our CEO has provided) but because they learned ETR isn't the place we all were made to believe it was.

We are sincerely saddened and disappointed that you are experiencing ETR’s commitment to diversity and inclusion as performative. We have, and continue to invest, in transforming historical policies and practices that have systematically excluded those with the least power. We are an organization in intense transformation over the past three years (nearly doubling in both staff size and revenue), and also doubling down on living our values of diversity and inclusion. We recognize that the work has meant that changing old practices while simultaneously inviting newer and more inclusive practices is emotionally draining and intense, particularly for anyone who joins in the midst of this transformation. We also recognize that while we have intentionally recruited new team members to speak up and speak out, the pace of change can be frustrating. But we believe it is the necessary work to be the best organization we can be. We will work to do better on transparency about our transformation and change.
