Pros

I've read some reviews here from former employees that were not reflective of my own experience there so I really feel the need to share. Naz and Hannah are great managers who cultivated a healthy team environment that made me excited to show up and do work. 50th parallel provides Comox valley with such a unique opportunity to work and LEARN in the pace and caliber that's more common in larger cities, and this has overall made me a better worker when I moved on to other roles outside of the company. I felt like Naz really cared about my growth, not just as an employee, but as a person. My life circumstances changed significantly due to COVID, and 50th was gracious and helpful in my transition out of the company. They didn't need to be, but they did anyway. I wasn't surprised, as in my whole experience in the company I always felt supported and taken care of. The team has changed (with great people in it still) but when I was in it I felt really happy with my coworkers - Brit, Alex, Chelsea, and Maddy, in addition to working under Hannah and Naz' leadership. Which if I could describe succinctly in 3 words are: diplomatic (I felt like heard), straightforward (efficient!), and caring. I felt valued in a professional setting, and that I could be myself amongst coworkers. (for me, it was no DRAMA ever. this was awesome) This made me passionate about creative projects, and to even try things that were outside of my comfort zone during my time there. I was especially impressed with the growth of the company too, as they were trying to move into less of a "lifestyle" sort of image and wanting to focus more on creative outputs. This was such an exciting transition to be a part of, and just shows that Naz truly has a vision of growth for the company. This has definitely raised my standards as an employee in choosing the people I work for and work with. To summarize it, I'm ultimately a better worker because of my time here, and really that's the best outcome you can ask for with any role.

Cons

So work/life balance only has 4/5 stars because I'm a stubborn advocate of the 4 day work week, but you can't really do that in Public Relations because your clients are on the 5 day so please don't take my rating of 4/5 rating too seriously. This is just me in protest against society at large. 50th is doing what they're expected to do and that's 5/5 stars. For compensation and benefits, I'm sure in time as they grow, benefits will be something their workers will get eventually, if not already, so that's the 4/5 (for now).

Pros

I was grateful to work at 50th while still quite fresh out of my degree in communication. I wanted to do meaningful work on a local level, and 50th Parallel's vision resonated with me. I learned so much at the job, and management was open to giving opportunities for those who wanted to grow with the company. I really found that there. I gained skills on how to edit both audio and visual media which is something I am particularly passionate about. The work was intense at times but it was also very rewarding. While I've since decided to pursue a path on the journalism level of things as opposed to the PR side of things, I will always be grateful for my time at 50th Parallel.

Cons

My reasons for leaving the company had more to do with the desire to shift fields from PR to journalism as opposed to issues within the company. As I mentioned above the work can be intense and busy season is very full. But also like I mentioned above - you will be met with reward if you work hard.
