It was a rather toxic environment that pushed me to tears after every shift. Understaffed is an understatement. Also, don't expect immediate approval for time off requests. My grandma has died that year right before Mother's in Day. After my mother told me the date of her funeral, I asked my supervisor at the time how I could request that day off, so someone could cover for me in my absence. For whatever reason, she didn't inform me that I had to fill out a request form. Instead, she asked me what time the funeral started, as if I should already be done grieving and ready to come back to my shift that same day. Neither of my former coworkers in the bakery were willing to cover for me. And the manager asked for my grandmother's death certificate. I instead presented the business card to the funeral home with my request for time off form. I didn't get approval until the last day before i was supposed to attend. Working part time 6 days a week. Those one hour breaks don't cut it when you want more than one day off. Prejudice on anyone who isn't either Chinese, Taiwanese, or Hispanic. It's rare to see another Asian Americans or any other ethnicity working there, besides corporate. Training with anyone in either of those groups constantly undermine your ability to grasp new information and learning ability if you can't speak Mandarin or Chinese. I was lucky to have found at least two coworkers who could speak fluent English, and another who spoke Cantonese.
