I really enjoyed my three years at Acquire, no it wasn’t perfect, and it wasn’t always plain sailing, but it was a very enjoyable time on the whole and probably the best company I have ever worked for. Please appreciate that because I wasn’t about to be asked to leave the company my review may be more positive than those who were. For a competent developer with experience of other companies working here is an exciting opportunity where you are given a high degree of freedom. The work is dynamic with a short turnaround and because its public facing it must be correct and bug free. Overall, the development team are trusted to make their own decisions on the best approach to meet the requirements. Both my machine and the office in general was well equipped. It is a small company, the directors are readily accessible, and they are willing to listen to suggestions and comments. It is a close-knit group of employees that are friendly welcoming and supportive. The company culture is anti-overtime, you start at 9 and you finish at 5, the theory being you are better when you aren’t tired, I think it works. There were a couple of occasions where we were asked if we could do overtime, but in 3 years I could count them on one hand. There have been some issues with hiring new staff over the last year resulting in some hires that were inappropriate. The main issue seems to stem from the lack of a proper “meet the team” session. Prior to COVID-19 candidates were invited into the office for ½ a day to meet the people they would be working with and get a good feel for the company and allow the company to get to understand what you were like and how you would fit into the team dynamic. I always thought that this session was more important than what your CV said, or indeed how the interviews went. Doing this over a video link isn’t the same. There are also issues with project management, they have a way of working that seems to work for them, but not for Project Managers so people have problems fitting into that role. I think to adapt to a ‘proper’ project management methodology would require a huge shift in the company’s structure and mentality and that would damage the essence of the company. If you are a self-motivated, adaptable, competent person, not afraid to stray from your role to get the job done then you will thrive here, I did, and I really miss working there.
