Thank you for your Glassdoor review of your internship experience at Alpine Homes. Residential construction project management is undoubtedly a busy, challenging, and rewarding career path.
We look for interns to show initiative, ask questions, and enthusiastically immerse themselves in their internship experience. You’re correct; there is not a lot of hand-holding. Alpine Project Managers typically have 9 – 20 homes under construction at any one time. They deal with many day-to-day demands, including managing schedules, quality inspections, budgeting, subcontractor and materials availability, safety, jurisdiction inspections, stormwater compliance, sales and marketing, and permitting. Admittedly, this does not leave much time for the more intimate mentor-mentee experience you sought during your internship.
Every Alpine Homes Project Manager has completed Alpine Homes’ extensive Project Manager training program. Completing it takes about one year and involves a significant investment in time and energy from Alpine management. If interns decide an opportunity with Alpine Homes is for them upon graduation, Alpine begins this training program on the first day of work. Because of the training time involved and the fact that interns are typically engaged in their career path discernment (residential, commercial, or more specialized fields of Construction Management), we do not expose interns to this training program.
Alpine’s Project Managers at times share their slip-ups with all team members but it should be done in the spirit of continuous improvement. Yes, we do chuckle at our own mistakes.
Alpine must enthusiastically embrace bidding as part of our daily operational practices because of current supply chain and subcontractor availability challenges. Alpine Project Managers must have plans A, B, and C for subcontractors and material suppliers. Most of our key trade partners have worked with us for years and appreciate our timely, reliable, and equitable payments.
Alpine Homes wishes you the best as you complete your education and begin your construction management career. If you’d like to discuss your review in greater detail, please call me at (801) 838-9990.
Sincerely,
Ross Mitchell
