Pros
Everyone knows each other and asks how the kids and spouses are doing. The lab director helps fix instruments that aren't working. Christmas parties are usually fun. You have a lot of freedom in how you perform your work and schedule your activities. As long as you let management know ahead of time, you can come late or leave early.
Cons
No formal training, the lab director helps some, but a lot of it is learn-as-you-go. When a lot of samples come in, it gets very stressful to get results out on time. There aren't enough employees for everything that needs to be done, they need to hire a sample receiving person and a real QA manager. Raises are rarely given, even if you work there for years.
