Pros
- The benefits are really good. They have a matching 401k contribution and the health care is hard to beat.
Cons
- Management is broken and ill-experienced. The hiring managers exhibit nepotistic behaviors. They hire from within or hire friends rather than hiring qualified professionals. This results in managers looking out for themselves rather than taking care of and elevating their subordinates in an effort to make themselves look better to the owner of the company. This is a company-wide problem creates a very toxic, paranoid work environment for all except managers.
- Managers do not value their subordinates at all. On several occasions, I was told how to do my job by people who were unqualified and inept. I was told that my work could be done from an iPhone. I was made to feel like I was not contributing anything to the company by my superiors. This was reflected in what they were paying me, in the fact that I often had to purchase my own equipment because the company "didn't see it as a necessary expense."
- Lack of communication by management. I would be given projects and then told to switch gears and start something new because "it was more important." This resulted in several projects never getting finished, then having the blame fall on me rather than the managers who gave the instruction.
- Harsh, nonsensical rules. I worked at Appion for 7 years. They had a "one headphone policy" that meant you could have one headphone in and listen to music and whatnot because many of the tasks carried throughout the company were tedious. Because the owner caught one person watching a video a company-wide rule was put in place that no one could listen to music or have their phone out at all during company hours. This created a very toxic, tense work environment. Along these lines, the front office was told they weren't allowed to talk to each other because it looked like they were screwing around" even though they weren't all because the owner was having a bad day and saw them talking and all of the managers would do anything to please the owner.
- I had a coworker try and sleep with my girlfriend. They were then promoted to being my manager. The hiring manager knew full well what had happened and still promoted him. I was then fired. The managers only look out for themselves. Unless you are being hired as a manager, steer clear and far away from this toxic place. You will not be valued. You will not be properly compensated. You will be unhappy.
