Pros

I love the people I work with. All my teams and managers have been wonderful. Top management has seen a net improvement over the past year, and I trust them to be transparent in most things, and honest. I love the benefits, especially the 401(k) plan. I've always felt valued as a person and an employee.

Cons

A big pet peeve I share with many colleagues about Overstock is the distance of the parking garage from the office (1/4 mile). They ostensibly built it that far away to get employees to walk more (let us be adults and make our own healthy choices). But a suspected true reason was to create a physical barrier (distance) to keep employees on the campus so we'll be more productive. That said, Overstock is not in the practice of over-working its employees. The other main issue is the bonus structure (or usual lack thereof). There has never been consistency or transparency in bonuses. There's no way to make everyone happy with a bonus structure, but Overstock's handling of bonuses has, more often than not, left most people unsatisfied or questioning. In my several years with the company, company-wide bonuses have been paid out only once or twice, and they have been modest. The current bonus structure looks more promising, but we are in the first year of it and there is still a lack of transparency in details, despite executives touting that it is super transparent.

Pros

Fast paced environment with LOTS of hands-on experience with many different tools. The people are the reason to stay, lots of smart and caring people, managers, and leaders towards the bottom of the food chain.

Cons

Upper Management has completely destroyed this company and gutted it. In my several years at the company, communication is as poor as it could be. Bonuses are promised and then not followed up on. RIFs happen far too frequently. It is abundantly clear that this company does NOT care about it's employees, and at the moment is almost seems like they are trying as hard as they can to get people to quit so they don't have to pay severances before acquiring more companies and moving headquarters to Texas. The culture in the days of Overstock was incredible, it made people excited about being able to work there. Now people are hanging on by threads, large teams are now carried on the backs of just 1-2 people without additional pay as we see co-workers get laid off left and right. It is not sustainable. Important things are being missed because there are not enough people to do the work, which will end up biting the company in the butt for compliance and finance reasons.
